Chris Zorich Tearfully Remembers Coach Lou Holtz
The college football world continues to honor the legendary Lou Holtz, a national championship-winning coach and member of the National Football Foundation College Football Hall of Fame, who passed away this week, on Wednesday, March 4, 2026, at the age of 89.
The news of his passing has deeply resonated with former players, fellow coaches, and countless fans, particularly within the University of Notre Dame community where his coaching legacy was firmly established.
Among those reflecting on his life is former Notre Dame standout Chris Zorich, a two-time All-American and fellow College Football Hall of Famer.
Speaking during an appearance on WSBT-TV, Zorich shared personal memories of the Hall of Fame coach and offered emotional reflections about the profound impact Holtz had both on and off the football field.
Zorich described the loss as comparable to losing a parent or a close friend. He explained that although he knew Holtz had spent his final days in hospice care, the news of his passing was still deeply painful to accept.
Throughout his career, Holtz’s influence went far beyond wins and championships. He was widely respected not only for his success on the field but also for his dedication to shaping the character and life skills of the young men he coached. Zorich’s reflections paint the picture of a mentor who cared deeply about his players, motivated them with wisdom and discipline, and supported them in ways that often went unseen by the public.
The legacy of Coach Holtz endures through the countless lives he touched, leaving behind lessons of trust, compassion, perseverance, and commitment that continue to resonate far beyond the football field.
Lou Holtz passed away peacefully in Orlando, Florida, surrounded by members of his family. He leaves behind four children, nine grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
According to the obituary shared by Dawson Funeral Homes, a public visitation is scheduled for Sunday, March 15, 2026, from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. at the Basilica of the Sacred Heart.
The following day, Monday, March 16, 2026, a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at the Basilica at 1:00 p.m., after which Coach Holtz will be laid to rest at Cedar Grove Cemetery.
For those unable to attend in person, the funeral Mass will be livestreamed online. It will also be broadcast at Washington Hall, where a limited number of seats will be available for the public.
In addition, fans and members of the college football community will have more chances to pay tribute to Coach Holtz during the upcoming college football season.
May his soul rest in peace.
