Annalisa Pappano and Myrna Herzog perform an Andante by Francesco Guerini's on two pardessus de viole made by legendary Louis Guersan (c.1700-1770), one of the most important French viol makers of his time.
Guersan built also violins, violas, cellos, violas d’amore and guitars, but was especially prolific in building the five-string pardessus de viole. At least two dozen of the latter survive, made for members French aristocracy (such as Henriette de France, daughter of Louis XV), dating from about 1745 to 1763. Some have striped backs and ribs made of two woods and decorative heads carved by La Fille, as the the two pardessus played in this recording. Their tone is characteristically sweet and flute-like.
The performance took place during the international Pardessus Symposium at the Boston Early Music Festival 2017.
Nothing to better represent the sophisticated world of French aristocracy than Watteau's extraordinary painting "L'Embarquement de Cythère".
