U-Turn Annapurna 2 — Review
Equipment used
• Harness: Woody Valley Wani Light XL (3.25 kg)
• Glider: U-Turn Annapurna 2 L (31) – 3.7 kg
• Compact case: Supair (470 g)
• Reserve: SKY Quatro Light 130 (1.20 kg)
Introduction
While looking for an XL wing for Hike & Fly, I came across the U-Turn Annapurna 2, a lightweight version of the Emotion 4 optimized for mountain use. Without repeating what you can already find on the official website, I can say the wing immediately feels solid and comfortable.
According to the certification, the weight range is 110–125 kg, extended up to 132 kg, making it ideal for heavier pilots who still want to enjoy excellent thermal and dynamic lift performance.
The wing was tested in the well-known flying site of La Muela, Alarilla (Guadalajara).
In the backpack
Besides being light, the wing is surprisingly compact. It fits easily inside the Wani Light 3 backpack, leaving enough space for everything needed for a full winter day out, including food and water.
Compared to a traditional XL wing, the pack volume is reduced by almost 50%. With an appropriate compression bag, the internal space can be optimized even further.
The climb to La Muela is short but fairly steep. Nevertheless, the load remains well distributed and doesn’t create issues even on the steeper sections.
The flight
Even during groundhandling, the wing conveys a feeling of stability and calmness. As typical for lightweight wings, just a few meters per second of wind are enough to get in the air. The 3D profile and Nitinol rods keep the leading edge nicely open.
Noteworthy details:
There are Two loop attachments to secure the wing during difficult takeoffs, Two Velcros at the trailing edge base to keep the risers tidy.
The Minimalist risers, are very small yet effective and robust; the speed system uses two rings instead of pulleys, generating almost no friction. The small risers initially caused some minor issues as they tended to catch on my 360 camera, but this is easily solved with a bit of extra attention.
In the air
With just a bit of headwind, takeoff is immediate.
The wing is solid, stable, and inspires confidence even with sudden gusts.
Handling is very good; turns and 360s are quick and responsive, especially when you anticipate the turn with weight shift by a fraction of a second.
Big ears are extremely stable, both with and without speed; releasing the outer A’s, the wing reopens instantly without pilot input. Climbing in lift seems excellent; the wing stays stable and in turns the pilot’s bank angle remains comfortable.
Landing is docile, with very effective brake authority. In the final flare, the wing reacts quickly and generates more lift than expected.
Final verdict
My final rating is 10 out of 10.
The Annapurna 2, combined with the Wani Light 3, is a winning setup for Hike & Fly. It’s not the lightest combination possible, but it offers a superb balance of weight, safety, and performance. It’s suitable both for beginners and for more experienced pilots looking for a wing without surprises—stable, predictable, and confidence-inspiring.
