Dorset
10 weeks, 4 sites, two weeks in three of them and four weeks over Christmas and New Year. Started Wednesday 27th November 2024, finished Wednesday 5th February 2025.
Stayed on the far east boarder near Alderholt, then near to Wareham. To the left by Bridport and centrally between Sherborne and Dorchester.
We straddled the Hampshire boarder, went along the Jurassic coast, coves, marina's and harbours. We saw the cliffs, chalk downs, forests, hills and valleys of the National Landscape.
Within the Dorset boarders there are approximately 37 towns and villages (no cities) of which we saw or passed through 26.
We passed across many rivers heading for the sea ... The Asker, the Bride, the Stour, the Frome, the Allen, the Piddle (☺️), the Corfe, the Lym, the Brit, the Wey and the Avon. I'm sure we crossed many more.
There is one naked man on the hillside... The Cerne Abbas Giant. Rude 🤣
The highest point in Dorset is Lewesdon Hill, 279 m (915 ft), which we drove across from Beaminster.
Dorset specific food was mixed. We don't like blue cheese but did try the Dorset Blue Vinny... We still don't like blue cheese 🫢 although I'm sure it's a good one. Other local cheeses were good. The Dorset Apple Cake went down very well. Didn't want to try the Naga Chilli 🥵
Best towns/villages and coves for us were Christchurch, Highcliffe, Wimborne Minster, Swanage, Wareham, Broadstone, Kimmeridge (which has the world's oldest continuously oil pumping well), Bournemouth, Blandford Forum, Bridport, West Bay, Lyme Regis, Weymouth, Isle of Portland, Dorchester, Chesil Beach, Sherborne, Shaftesbury, Man of War/Durdle Door and Cerne Abbas. Worst for us, Poole town.
Well known for it's Jurassic Coast, beaches and coves with shale, sand, grit and pebbles. Inland Dorset in the east is full of forests with the west more like moors with hills and valleys and amazing views as you travel the coastal road.
Favourite attractions: Drove End Woods, Kingston Lacy, Christchurch Castle and Norman House, RSPB Arne, Wareham Forest, Corfe Castle, Sika Trail, The Blue Pool (and the longest UK rope bridge), Bournemouth Pier... Heidi's first, Portland Bill Lighthouse, Portland Castle, Sculpture by the Lakes, Abbotsbury Abbey remains, St. Nicholas Church, Cerne Abbas Giant, Minterne House and Gardens, Hillfield local nature reserve.
We had a couple of storms with 60+mph winds and lots of rain also Christmas and New Year taking us into 2025. The surprise was seeing Daffodils in full flower at this time of year. We expected palm trees 🥴
Many photos and videos taken, we will try to show some of our favourites.
This was 'our' Dorset 🙂
