Chaos and controversy today in Nigeria’s House of Representatives as lawmakers passed far-reaching amendments to the Electoral Act. Amid protests inside the chamber and demonstrations outside the National Assembly.
The House aligned with the Senate to drop real-time electronic transmission of election results and scrap indirect party primaries.
The session was disrupted by shouting matches, walkouts, and a prolonged closed-door meeting, as opposition lawmakers warned that the changes could weaken democracy ahead of the 2027 general elections.
