In this profound and reassuring composition, Purandara Dasa consoles the devotee who feels overwhelmed by suffering and fear. Moving through the many avatāras of Lord Narayana—from Matsya and Kurma to Rama, Krishna, and the final restorer of dharma—the song repeatedly affirms a central bhakti truth: constant remembrance of the name “Hari” dissolves all fear, sin, and distress. Each stanza reinforces that divine protection is timeless and unconditional, culminating in the assurance that sincere remembrance of Purandara Vittala leads the soul to Satyaloka, the realm of truth.
Traditionally, this song is understood to have been composed at a time when Muslims in the region were celebrating a festival. With remarkable sensitivity and inclusiveness, Purandara Dasa framed the refrain using phonetic forms such as “bham̐san” and “kiṁsan”, aligning with names familiar in the Islamic devotional context (associated with Ba Husain and Ka Husain), so the song could be sung and heard without resistance. Yet, the philosophical core of the composition is entirely Vaishnavite—the subject throughout is Lord Narayana alone, the Parabrahma, supreme, fearless, and free of all defects. In this way, the song stands as a rare example of Purandara Dasa’s spiritual universality: adapting language for harmony, while unwaveringly affirming the supremacy of Hari as the ultimate refuge for all.
