Dogs generalize labels based on object function / Curr. Biol., Sep. 9, 2025 (Vol. 35, Issue 19)

Описание: "Gifted Word Learner" dogs learned verbal labels for two groups of objects based on their functions: objects used to play tug of war, called "pull," and objects used to play fetch, called "fetch." The objects in each group did not share perceptual similarities; they only shared function. Next, the dogs were shown the function of novel objects, also of diverse perceptual features, during play sessions in which the verbal labels were not provided. When tested, the dogs were able to sort these novel objects into the pull or fetch groups upon being requested by their owners to “Bring a pull/fetch!”
