THE VIDEO: This nearly 45-minute walk, filmed in November 2024, is along Jiufen Old Street (九份老街), sometimes called Jishan Street (基山街). You'll wander along this busy narrow, winding alleyway lined with shops, teahouses, and restaurants and see the area's famous taro and sweet potato balls (芋圓) being made at Ah Gan Taro Balls. This was a very rainy walk so, sorry about the raindrops on the lens.

THE LOCATION: Not far from Taiwan's capital city, Taipei, Jiufen is an old town in Ruifang District of New Taipei City by Keelung Mountain overlooking the Yinyang Sea.

SPIRITED AWAY: Jiufen is often said to be the inspiration for the 2001 animated film 'Spirited Away' by Hayao Miyazaki. However, Miyazaki himself said that Jiufen was not the inspiration for the animated classic and that Dōgo Onsen in Matsuyama, Shikoku, Japan was. (See • 【FOCUS新聞】TVBS專訪宮崎駿 72歲不老頑童 ) Jiufen was, however, featured in a 1989 Taiwanese film called 'A City of Sadness' by Hou Hsiao-Hsien.
Fun fact: Jiufen gets its name from the original nine families who settled in the village during the Qing dynasty (1636-1911). Ships would supply the remote village and the families would request nine portions of shipments every time they arrived (九Jiu=nine 份Fen=portion).
