Three years after Toyota launched the third generation Kluger SUV, the company is giving one of its most solid performers a well deserved update, with the biggest changes coming under the bonnet.
The Kluger has been on sale in Australia for more than 13 years, and it could arguably be called one of the first proper crossover SUVs.
Some of its thunder has been stolen in recent times by new vehicles like Toyota's own Fortuner, while the SUV market around the Kluger has simply exploded.
For this mid-life update, Toyota has updated the Kluger's drivetrain, and given the wagon a bit of a nip and tuck.
The Kluger's V6 now has direct fuel injection, which means power and torque increases of around five per cent.
There's also a new eight-speed auto gearbox that replaces the six-speed unit, which helps to lower fuel consumption as well.
Other changes to the Kluger include new headlights with daytime running lamps built in, a new lower front bumper and revised taillights that incorporate an LED bar and emergency stop lighting for better visibility.
The mid grade GXL now gets a powered tailgate, sat nav and digital radio, while the top end Grande gets rear cross traffic alert front parking sensors and improved lane departure control.
The suspension tune of the Kluger hasn't changed, and testing it on the awesome roads around Los Angeles hasn't changed our opinion of the car – it handles perfectly well for the average Aussie driver.
We've used this drivetrain in other Toyota products, and it suits the size of the Kluger perfectly. The gearbox is smooth and intuitive, and the engine responds with minimal fuss.
In fact It's absolutely competent in every way. It's comfortable, it's quiet, it's super easy to drive, there's great visibility and loads of room for all the stuff a family needs to lug around.
The Kluger will continue to be sold as a front or all-wheel-drive, and Toyota tells us that pricing should remain pretty much the same when it lands in the middle of 2017.
The Kluger has seen the midsize crossover market explode all around it over the last few years, and no doubt its sales have suffered, as people look for something that's a little bit different.
Equally, the Kluger name keeps floating back to the top of people's shopping lists because of its value and its reputation, and this mid-life facelift will only serve to remind people just how competent it really is.
