STORYLINE:
A tearful family in Brazil told of their Christmas Day grief on Friday after a decision by the Brazilian Supreme Court to give custody of 9-year-old Sean Goldman to his US-based father.
Silvana Bianchi, the boy''s grandmother, told of the trauma that was caused to her family.
"It separated two brothers," she told a news conference in Rio de Janeiro, the boy''s uncle weeping beside her.
During the news conference the family lawyer, Sergio Tostes, showed letters that according to him were sent by David Goldman and received and answered by Sean during his five years in Brazil.
The grandmother showed a drawing from Sean saying that he wanted to stay in Brazil, and in an emotional appeal she said that she hoped the biological father could treat Sean just as he was treated in Brazil, with "the same comfort, the same education, the same moral (values), the same caring that he was receiving here, including school level and education."
A reunion of father and son on Thursday ended the long battle that pitted Sean''s father against the boy''s Brazilian stepfather, who had cared for Sean since his mother (Goldman''s former wife) died last year.
The dispute had strained relations between Brazil and the US and reached the highest level of government.
US President Barack Obama discussed the matter with his Brazilian counterpart, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, and US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said she was "thrilled" that father and son had been reunited.
When the boy''s handover was blocked last week, the US Senate put a hold on a trade deal worth about 2.75 (b) billion US dollars (1.9 (b) billion euros) a year to Brazil.
Sean had lived in Brazil since Goldman''s ex-wife, Bruna Bianchi, brought him to her native country for what was supposed to be a two-week holiday in 2004. She stayed, divorced Goldman and remarried, and Goldman began legal efforts to get Sean back.
After Bianchi died last year in childbirth, her husband, Paulo Lins e Silva, a prominent divorce attorney, continued the legal fight and won temporary custody.
