The US Strategic Petroleum Reserve held 415.4 million barrels on February 18, 2026. As of May 1, 2026, it holds 392 million barrels. The difference — 172 million barrels — was released as part of the largest emergency oil drawdown in the 50-year history of the International Energy Agency, all in response to Iran closing the Strait of Hormuz and cutting 20 percent of global oil supply from the market.
And it still wasn't enough.
In this video, we break down what the Strategic Petroleum Reserve actually is, how it works, and whether it's sufficient for the crisis we're now facing using fresh May 2026 data. We explain why President Ford established the SPR after the 1973-74 Middle East oil embargo and how that 50-year-old infrastructure is now proving inadequate for a 21st-century geopolitical crisis.
We walk through the actual numbers: the SPR can release 4.4 million barrels per day maximum, but it takes 13 days for that oil to reach U.S. markets. The 400 million barrel coordinated global release equals only 4 days of global oil consumption (105.17 million barrels per day). The Strait closure disrupted 9 million barrels per day that cannot be rerouted through pipelines — that oil is trapped. JPMorgan warns OECD inventories will reach "operational stress" by June and "operational minimum" by September if the Strait doesn't reopen.
We cover the unprecedented response: the Trump administration is exploring drilling beneath U.S. military bases to refill the SPR with 200 million barrels within a year. U.S. distillate stockpiles are at their lowest point since 2005. Gasoline stockpiles are at their lowest seasonal levels since 2014. The SPR is now at levels not seen since the 1980s.
Then we explain what this SPR depletion means for the dollar, for de-dollarization, and for silver as an alternative reserve asset when government buffers are exhausted.
This is not speculation. This is what the official data shows about American energy security in May 2026.
