STORYLINE:
Just weeks ahead of winter, the cold weather and rains have arrived in Gaza, where hundreds of thousands of people crammed into tent camps with no homes to return to.

"We were affected by the rain, and our children were covered by the rain tonight, and our clothes got wet and we have nothing to protect ourselves,” said Um Mohammad Marouf who fled the bombardments in Beit Lahiya, in northern Gaza, and is now in an improvised tent camp in Gaza City.

The Israeli offensive in Gaza has caused heavy destruction across wide areas of the coastal territory.

The U.N estimates that around 90% of the population of 2.3 million people have been displaced, often multiple times, and hundreds of thousands are living in squalid tent camps with little food, water or basic services. Israeli evacuation orders now cover around 90% of the territory.

“We left the north and did not die from the Jews (Israelis) or the bombing. We left after a siege, but today the rain and cold kills us. I have been sick for three days due to the cold," said Ahmad, displaced from Jabaliya refugee camp.

Humanitarian organizations have said they have struggled to bring in basic supplies because of Israeli restrictions, the ongoing fighting and the breakdown of law and order in Gaza.

The United Nations humanitarian office has warned of a “stark increase” in the number of households experiencing severe hunger in central and southern Gaza.

The amount of food Israel has let into Gaza the past seven weeks has plummeted, now at nearly the lowest levels of the entire war.

Even less than that is reaching the territory’s 2.3 million Palestinians because of the many obstacles to distribution, aid groups and the U.N. say.

The war erupted following Hamas' attack in Southern Israel on October 7 last year in which some 1,200 people were killed and around 250 taken hostages.
