The Shagya Arabian is a historic horse breed developed in the Austro-Hungarian Empire in the late 18th century, especially at the Bábolna Stud in Hungary. It was created by crossing pure desert-bred Arabians with strong European horses such as the Lipizzaner and Thoroughbred, aiming to keep the beauty and endurance of the Arabian while adding greater size, strength, and versatility.
The breed is generally 15–16 hands high, taller and heavier-boned than most pure Arabians. It has a refined head, arched neck, powerful body, and elegant movement, while still carrying the classic Arabian look. Colors are usually gray, bay, chestnut, or black.
Historically, Shagya Arabians were prized as cavalry horses, carriage horses, and foundation stock for improving warmblood breeds across Europe. Their endurance, intelligence, and noble character made them valuable in both war and peace. Today, they are used in endurance riding, dressage, show jumping, and pleasure riding, and are recognized as a separate breed from the pure Arabian, though closely related
