I'm 24 and just made $6 million from selling my app to Google three weeks ago. I haven't told anyone except my parents, and I'm still living in my crappy apartment while I process everything.
Yesterday was my high school reunion. I almost didn't go because I was that weird quiet kid who got bullied constantly. But I decided to show up and see how everyone turned out.
I walked in wearing a simple black dress from Target and my old Converse sneakers. Immediately, I spotted the popular girls who used to make my life hell - Jessica, Madison, and their crew.
Jessica saw me first and literally burst out laughing.
"Oh my God, look who crawled out of her cave! Still shopping at thrift stores, I see."
Madison joined in, looking me up and down with disgust.
"Wow, some people really never change. Still the same loser from high school."
Their whole group started giggling and whispering. One of them actually took a photo of me, probably to post on social media later.
"Let me guess," Jessica continued loudly, "still living with your parents? Still working at that dead-end job?"
I tried to walk away, but they followed me.
"Come on, don't be shy! Tell us about your amazing life," Madison said sarcastically. "We're all dying to know how successful you've become."
More people started gathering around, including some guys who used to shove me into lockers. They were all smirking, waiting for the show.
"I bet she's still a single too," someone whispered, causing another round of laughter.
Jessica pulled out her phone and started recording.
"This is going straight to TikTok. 'Loser from high school still a loser ten years later.'"
"Please stop," I said quietly, but that just made them laugh harder.
"Aww, she's gonna cry just like in high school," Madison mocked. "Some things never change."
The whole group was now openly filming me, making comments about my appearance, my clothes, everything. Other classmates were starting to stare and whisper.
"I heard she works at a gas station," someone said loudly.
"Probably still lives in that trashy apartment complex," another added.
I was about to leave when our old math teacher, Mr. Thompson, walked over. He was the only teacher who ever believed in me.
"Maya! I can't believe you're here!" he said, genuinely excited.
The bullies rolled their eyes, clearly annoyed by the interruption.
"Mr. Thompson, you remember the class weirdo," Jessica said dismissively.
Mr. Thompson's expression changed immediately.
"Excuse me? Maya was one of my brightest students. And speaking of which..." He turned to me with a huge smile. "I saw the news about your app sale to Google! Fifteen million dollars! I'm so proud of you!"
You could hear a pin drop. Jessica's phone literally slipped from her hands. Madison's mouth fell open. The entire group went dead silent.
"Wait, what?" Jessica stammered.
"Maya here just became one of the youngest female tech entrepreneurs in the state," Mr. Thompson announced proudly. "Google bought her app for six million dollars!"
The same people who were just mocking me were now staring in complete shock. Jessica's face went from smug to mortified in seconds.
"I... I was just joking around," Madison said weakly, her voice barely a whisper.
"Were you?" I asked calmly, pulling out my phone to show them the news article about the acquisition. "Because it sounded like you were being the same bullies you were in high school."
I walked away, leaving them standing there in stunned silence.
