Abstract: In anticipation of the impact covid would have, in early 2020 several mathematicians created the online Polymath Jr Summer Research Program; it's been so successful it runs annually, providing hundreds of students with opportunities to learn, apply and extend mathematics. We report on one of the projects we mentored: modeling predator–prey dynamics on Florida alligators and their role in wetland ecosystems. Our students had minimal backgrounds in the subject; this was a great way to excite them about learning the material and guide them to original research. We report on our successes and opportunities for others to join us in reaching similar students in future summers.
