"The Maker Of Birds" is an unreleased song that Stevie recorded in March 1978. This was one of many songs that Stevie wrote especially for what was to be the soundtrack of the 'Rhiannon' movie, which would have been Stevie's first solo album. Stevie was also set to star in the film as Rhiannon herself. Stevie realized that she did not like acting in front of a camera.

In "The Maker Of Birds", Stevie uses the story of the Welsh goddess Rhiannon as retold by Evangeline Walton in 'Prince Of Annwn', the first of Walton's four books adapting the Welsh Mabinogion. Stevie uses the imagery from the chapter of 'Prince Of Annwn' titled "The Maker Of Birds."

Stevie copyrighted this song in February and March 1978 as "The Maker Of Birds." Bootleg recordings incorrectly labeled this song as "The Three Birds Of Rhiannon," which is why so many persist in using that false title.

Other known songs from the 'Rhiannon' film project are "Forsaken Love", "Blue Water", "Stay Away", "Forest Of The Black Roses" and, of course, "Rhiannon." Stevie has also mentioned in later years that some of her released songs were part of the 'Rhiannon' song cycle, such as "Angel", "Kind Of Woman" and "Sorcerer." She also said in 1979 that she had 22 songs written especially with the 'Rhiannon' movie in mind.

In May 1989, Stevie said that there were 11 'Rhiannon' songs fully recorded, mixed and ready for release, although that album has still never been released.
