On this episode of Searching for History, Erin and I visit Fort Steilacoom. Under the command of Captain Bennett H. Hill, Company M, First Artillery Regiment arrived on the former Joseph Heath farmstead on August 28, 1849. Leasing the land from the Hudson’s Bay Company, they converted existing structures and built new buildings to construct enlisted barracks, officer’s quarters, mess halls, a hospital, etc., creating Fort Steilacoom. Fort Steilacoom was decommissioned as a military post and closed in 1868, only 19 years after its construction. Join us as we visit Fort Steilacoom.
