Aminé - “Limbo” [FULL ALBUM] REACTION + WRITTEN REVIEW

Waiting 2 years since his last project, Aminè has dropped his highly anticipated sophomore album “Limbo”. Seeing how this album took quite a bit of time to create, it wouldn’t be fallible to state that this project could be the make it or break it point in his career, especially as a rapper.

Thematically, this album speaks on a variety of things, his comeback, his mother and family, there are several songs that speak on relationships but I think the underlying theme in this album is the “limbo” state that he sees his career in. The uncertainty of knowing where to go next after finding initial fame seems to be on his mind throughout this album. Even in the songs about relationships, uncertainty and rocky situations are main components in the lyrics which is why it fits into the overall theme of the album. Aminè even takes it a step further and expresses how worried he is of bringing a child into this chaotic world on “Fetus”. Aminè seems to be in a state of limbo in almost every aspect of his life: his career, relationships, and future. Although the content may appear bleak, Aminé mostly performs in a way that sounds and feels fun. The tracks are easy to listen to and for the most part bring on a laidback, cool aesthetic. And while most of the album deals in uncertainty and overthinking, it ultimately ends in relief and peace as Aminè accepts his life and accomplishments as reality and chooses to move forward acknowledging his past and where he’s come from.

Lyrically, Aminé does well to come up with catchy flows, notable phrases, melodic hooks and sings quite well on most of these songs. His voice and delivery sound cool and natural which adds to the feel-good vibe of this album. The features on here for the most part deliver very well apart from the irritating duration of slowthai and Vince Staples’ verses. Unfortunately, Aminé’s lyrical content and overall delivery don’t strike me as unique or ambitious enough to keep me intrigued for an entire album. While I overall did enjoy his performance, there aren’t a lot of songs on here that showcase a lot of growth from his last project. Some songs here also lacked a great amount of depth in the lyrics such as the Summer Walker collaboration, “Easy” or “Can’t Decide”. Others are just ridiculously cringey to me, namely “Becky” (one of my least favorite songs I’ve heard this year). So it seems like Aminé is definitely able to string together lyrics and flows that overall sound good on a surface level but if you dig any further into the lyrics, you’ll find yourself hitting rock almost immediately.

Sonically, this album for the most part utilized a lot of popular trap sounding beats. The instrumentals helped create the laid-back fun atmosphere that Aminé is popular for. Even in the more energetic sounding songs, the main focus seems to always remain sounding cool and composed, which Aminé is great at performing as. Though the beats aren’t necessarily generic, the influence really bleeds through at times. The guitars in “Can’t Decide” really help with the melodic singing hook but it eerily sounds like a typical Gunna song. The beat on “Woodlawn” straight up sounds like a DaBaby beat and it was insanely hard for me to stop thinking about Westside Gunn’s “Wrestlemania 20” on “Burden”. There were a few instrumentals that stood out to me, namely the experimental, sort of metallic and clunky-sounding “Fetus”.

All in all, I wasn’t too impressed with this album. There are a few highlights but when taken into account with the rest of the project, it doesn’t seem like Aminé has grown creatively from the last time that we heard from him. Thanks for reading and watching!
