In the Body's Life-Saving Response to Trauma, Stephen Porges, PhD, shares a critical piece of information for people who blame themselves for not fighting back against their abuser.
By learning how and why their body responded the way it did, many clients are able to gain a new perspective on their traumatic experience and start to foster a new path to healing.
Stephen is the creator of Polyvagal Theory, and is the top expert on how the nervous system responds to cues of safety and threat. He calls on his theory to help explain a very common reaction in the body during trauma.
After a physical assault, clients can often give in to thoughts of "I could've done more" or "I should've fought back". They blame themselves because their body shut down during the attack.
It can feel like their body abandoned them in the hour of their greatest need. And this self-blame can quickly turn into devastating feelings of shame, guilt, and worthlessness.
But Stephen has a powerful answer to all this: your body might have actually saved your life.
In this video, Stephen will explain why some clients struggle to engage in close relationships. And he'll then get into the adaptive trauma response of the nervous system, and how it's programmed to react in a certain way when facing threat.
This can help explain why some clients dissociated or immobilized during their assault. And once clients have this information, they can begin to see their experience painted in an entirely new light.
The hope is that they'll then start to shift out of painful feelings of victimhood and toward a more heroic self-narrative.
