Hetaerism =
sex outside of marriage (implies existence of a marriage system)
Gens = basic group of ancient humans, based on kinship
Phratry =
middle group that sometimes exists between smaller gens and larger tribes
Exogamy =
rules limiting marriage outside the gens
Endogamy =
rules limiting marriage inside the gens
Polygamy =
many marriage partners
Polygyny =
marriage with 1 man and several wives
Polyandry =
marriage with 1 woman and several husbands
Monogamy =
individual marriage which arose to insure men get to leave their property to their heir
Consanguinity =
bloodline/descent. Systems of consanguinity measure closeness in descent
Matriarchy = system where descent is observed in the mother's bloodline and not the father's. Later this also meant that when inheritance was invented, it was originally in the mother's line.
