Senegal: Opposition leader Ousmane Sonko and presidential candidate Bassirou Diomaye Faye were released from prison late Thursday, 10 days before the election. Sonko was at the heart of a bitter two-year stand-off over charges of defaming a minister and has been in prison since July. Faye, who Sonko has endorsed for president, was imprisoned in April 2023 after posting a message critical of the justice system.
Somalia: At least three people were killed and 27 injured when attackers stormed the SYL hotel in the capital, Mogadishu, a police spokesperson said Friday, with al-Qaida-linked group al-Shabab claiming responsibility.
Gaza: Humanitarian aid was airdropped Friday into Gaza, where famine looms after five months of Israel's military campaign.
Ukraine: Ukrainians living in regions illegally annexed by Russia are being coerced to vote in the presidential election of Vladimir Putin — an exercise denounced by Ukraine as an illegitimate effort by Moscow to tighten control over its neighbor.
Zimbabwe: A man calling himself Prophet Ishmael was charged Thursday, after police raided the compound where he led a religious sect, and found more than 250 children being kept away from school and used as cheap labor, and 16 unregistered graves, including those of seven infants.
