Guilford Lake, right outside of Salem Ohio, has been in my DNA since I was a little child, back when my grandmother lived right on the water. Both my mom and my stepdad found their way down to the lake in 1981 — That’s how they met.
When I was 15, we moved from Cleveland and bought the house just down from my grandparents. My step father's parents lived next to my grandparents. That small cluster of homes became our whole world — And to this day, they’re still there in that same house on beautiful Guilford Lake near Red Maple Landing.
Guilford Lake is family. It’s second chances. It’s where everything re-rooted. It’s home.
Guilford Lake, Ohio (State Park)
The lake’s original reservoir was constructed in 1834 as part of Ohio’s canal system, serving as a feeder for the Sandy & Beaver Canal.
The modern lake known today was rebuilt in 1932 when the State of Ohio reconstructed the dam after the original canal system declined and the lake had been drained for farmland.
Guilford Lake began as part of Ohio’s ambitious canal system in the mid-19th century. It was originally built as a feeder reservoir for the Sandy & Beaver Canal, which connected communities and transported goods before railroads took over.
When the canal system collapsed in the late 1800s, the lake was eventually drained and the land was used as farmland.
The Lake Was Reborn (1930s)
In the early 1930s, during the Great Depression, the State of Ohio rebuilt the dam. The modern reservoir was completed around 1932.
State Park Era (Post-WWII Growth)
Guilford Lake officially became a state park in 1949. After World War II, small lake communities across America became gathering spots for working-class families. Cabins, fishing docks, pontoon boats, bonfires — that whole Midwest lake culture started to grow right here.
