In Spalding, UK, Worldwide Fruit Ltd. had been challenged with inconsistency of avocados and short shelf life after the conventional ripening process. The traditional system simply made too much food waste – at both producer and consumer. The company was losing around 4% of its avocado batch from “cuttings” alone – the old-fashioned process to determine whether the fruit was ripe. On a European level, that’s the equivalent of 20,000 containers of fruit a year that are destroyed just to test their ripeness, according to JD Cooling’s John Dye. The new Softripe system by JD Cooling – with Grundfos pumps at the heart – has added intelligence, control and efficiency.

Softripe uses airtight rooms and an optimal mix of heat, cooling and natural gases (like oxygen, nitrogen, carbon dioxide and the “fruit gas” ethylene) to ripen the fruit. An algorithm controls the process, which changes depending on the type and origin of the avocados.

“With the Softripe process, we are listening to the fruit. We're talking to the fruit,” says JD Cooling’s James Tumber. “We're giving the fruit what it needs when it needs it. Softripe has almost put it back on the tree to get it to that perfect eating condition.” The system ripens the fruits 40% faster and saves about 30% energy over conventional ripening systems, cutting food waste by 7%. Supermarkets and consumers enjoy a doubly long shelf life with better and tastier avocados.

“This system has changed everything for us,” says Worldwide Fruit’s Ripening Manager Ilona Stylinska. “It changed the way we order fruits. The way we buy fruits. The way we deliver fruits. The way we pack fruits. It changed our process completely.”
