COVID-19 Patient With Irreversible Lung Damage Recovers After Double Lung Transplant:
Paul Rodriguez is the first #COVID19 patient to receive a double-lung transplant at Baylor St. Luke’s. To date, only a handful of transplant centers in the U.S. have performed transplants due to irreversible lung damage caused by the virus.
Rodriguez contracted COVID-19 and pneumonia back in July in his hometown of San Antonio. Not long after hospitalization, he required intubation and ventilatory support.
As his condition deteriorated, his doctor in San Antonio contacted Dr. Puneet Garcha, medical director of lung transplantation at Baylor St. Luke’s Medical Center in Houston. It became clear that a lung transplant was his only chance of survival.
Before heading to Houston, and while he was still hospitalized, Rodriguez married his fiancée. And within a week of getting on the transplant list, he got a new set of lungs. A surgical team led by Dr. Gabriel Loor, surgical director of lung transplantation at Baylor St. Luke’s, performed the double-lung transplant on October 15.
Rodriguez is now recovering at a rehab facility and hopes to be home for the holidays. He recently celebrated his 52nd birthday.
