Описание: How should the prominence of the emperor and absence of the pope at Nicaea impact not only our assessment of the council but also the relevance of the emperor and the papacy for the early church? I follow this section with a short reflection on some of the unanticipated consequences of the church’s embrace of imperial structures and the ways in which state dependence in the Byzantine period continues to haunt the contemporary church, at least the Orthodox Church. I conclude by arguing that the future of Nicaea will, by necessity, need to rely on the Papacy.
