I don't think this is the intended purpose of guarding...
Keep doing your best to not "phase" through the midboss as you damage it, in order to not get cornered. While it's jump/dash attacks make it easier to escape, getting cornered by a bomb attack can lead to a devastating scenario:
If it holds a bomb in the middle, it will throw it forward, which means it'll hit you directly unless you back down and crouch or are so close to it that you don't get affected (I am still not sure if this is what the actual explanation for this is, but it happened in the run...)
Additionally, you don't want to get too reckless with your damage output, and take pauses in order to not be caught off guard by the aforomentioned forward bomb attack or the movement ones. Being careful isn't much slower, and since the boss speeds up once below 50% health anyway, it's better to do so at that point
