For a single pipe steam system if you are experiencing noisy clanking and knocking caused by a water hammer try following these steps to resolve:
1) Put a level on each radiator and make sure it's tilted towards the steam pipe.
2) Replace the air valves.
3) Make sure the shut-off valve is all the way open or all the way closed (not half-way open).
4) Make sure your boiler isn't over-filled. If it is drain it and replace the water so that it is only half-way up the sight glass window.
