Re editing a shorter version but if you are not familiar with the story of Belchite. The Battle of Belchite (1937) was in two phases. The town was initially taken by the Republican side but a short time later around the end of August 1937 a counter offensive by the Nationalist Forces was successful and ended on the 6th September with the almost complete destruction by shelling and bombing of the town. Almost 5,000 were killed in a week and General Franco ordered that the ruins be left untouched as a living monument of war. A new town was constructed next door.
