The commercial town of Litan in Manipur’s Ukhrul district is currently under a strict curfew and heavy security deployment following violent ethnic clashes between the Tangkhul Naga and Kuki communities. Triggered by a "misunderstanding" during a drunken brawl on February 7, the unrest escalated into a night of arson on February 8, resulting in the destruction of 25 houses and four government quarters. Panicked residents have begun a self-initiated mass evacuation, fleeing on foot and in private vehicles with their belongings, while the BSF, CRPF, and Assam Rifles work to maintain a fragile calm. Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh, who recently assumed office, visited the injured at RIMS hospital and has made a public appeal for restraint and communal harmony to prevent further escalation in this sensitive trading hub.
