Bible Passage: Mark 8.27–36

In this week's passage, Jesus asks his disciples a question that stands at the very centre of the Gospel of Mark: “Who do you say that I am?” Peter correctly recognises Jesus as the Christ, yet almost immediately reveals that he has misunderstood what that truly means.

Why does Jesus respond so sharply to Peter’s attempt to rebuke him? What does it mean for Jesus to be the Messiah who must suffer? And why does Jesus then turn to the crowd and say that anyone who wants to follow him must deny themselves and take up their cross?

In this sermon, we explore how recognising Jesus as the Christ is only the beginning. True discipleship means embracing the surprising path of the cross, trusting that losing our life for Christ’s sake is the only way to truly find it.
