Applied Behavioural Analysis (ABA) can feel like a form of emotional and psychological punishment rather than support for Autistic children. It often treats natural behaviours like stimming or speaking in a way that feels authentic to us as something that needs to be "corrected." The pressure to conform to neurotypical standards, sometimes using methods that are emotionally distressing or even physically painful, can create trauma. Many Autistic people have ended up with PTSD from these experiences, feeling as though our identity was invalidated or that our natural responses to the world were wrong. The idea of "fixing" us through ABA therapy can sometimes feel like an attack on our essence, rather than an understanding of our needs. For some, it leads to a sense of profound shame or self-doubt that stays long after the therapy ends.
