At the 2024 Smithsonian Folklife Festival, celebrating “Indigenous Voices of the Americas,” the Native American Women Warriors (NAWW) opened each morning with a presentation of colors, processing from the Welcome Plaza of the National Museum of the American Indian to the National Native American Veterans Memorial.
NAWW was founded in 2010 and recognized as the first all-women Native American color guard organization. American Indians and Alaska Natives have one of the highest representations in the armed forces, and Native American women are the fastest-growing population of veterans. NAWW empowers active and retired Native American servicewomen with tools and support. They serve their communities and organizations by performing color guard duties, volunteering, and more.
