Discover the untold story of Slapton Sands, the quiet shingle beach in South Devon that became one of the most important Allied training grounds for the D-Day invasion.
In 1943, the British government evacuated over 2,700 local residents so American, British, and Canadian forces could prepare for Operation Overlord. At Slapton, troops rehearsed every part of an amphibious assault: embarking on landing craft, coordinating naval and air bombardments, clearing beaches, and establishing supply routes.
Major exercises such as Duck, Fox, Muskrat, Beaver, Trousers, Tiger, and Fabius tested every detail of the invasion plan. The tragic German E-boat attack during Exercise Tiger, which killed 749 servicemen, exposed serious flaws in convoy protection and communication that were urgently corrected before D-Day.
By the summer of 1944, the massive training programme ended, and Slapton Sands was returned to its residents. Yet the experience gained here—vehicle waterproofing, beach logistics, naval gunfire coordination, and large-scale landing rehearsals—played a direct role in the success of 6 June 1944.
This documentary explores how a quiet corner of Devon helped shape the largest amphibious assault in history.
