Acetaldehyde is a reactive compound that can damage DNA and proteins inside our bodies. It’s also known as a carcinogen that can cause cancer in humans. There are four main sources of acetaldehyde that we should be aware of. Acetaldehyde is the most common in air pollutants both indoors and outdoors. Indoor air pollutant comes from household chemicals and building materials. Outdoor pollutant comes from vehicle emissions and industrial pollution.
Acetaldehyde is the most common toxin in cigarette smoke and in second hand smoke and contributes to many of the negative long term health effects of smoking.
Acetaldehyde can also be found in our common food and diet such as coffee, fresh fruit and yogurt and it can also be converted when the diet is high in sugar. So when sugar enters the body, it is converted in the stomach to acetaldehyde, which then gets absorbed and distributed throughout the body.
A major source of acetaldehyde is alcohol consumption. When drinking, ethanol is converted into acetaldehyde which can accumulate very rapidly especially in people with a genetic mutation called ALDH2 Deficiency as they can’t break down acetaldehyde properly. This causes a series of negative physical symptoms called Alcohol Flush Reaction which is characterized by a red flushing of the face and skin.
