New Jersey has been called the crossroads of the American Revolution. Hundreds of colorful and heroic scenes have played out along our oceanfront.
Mariners along the Jersey Shore saw the Revolutionary War as an opportunity, for both profit and patriotism. Privateers were commissioned by the colony, to attack British ships and capture precious cargo so badly needed by our fighting armies. These exceptional sailors found that the channels and inlets along the Jersey coast, provided excellent refuge from the enemy, while being treacherous waters for the British. Men in armed whaleboats carried out daring night raids on enemy vessels with outstanding precision.
Attacks by the British resulted in some bloody losses for the American colonists, however. Hundreds of patriots were killed or captured. These brave men were able to wage successful warfare for five long years, against the overwhelming odds of British naval strength.
On December 23rd, 1783, the immense British fleet sailed out of Sandy Hook Bay, homeward bound for England. A panorama never before seen, as it spread itself over the open sea. Standing on The Highlands, our patriots could watch as the mass of sails slowly sank over the horizon.
