Article 9 has been reinterpreted over the years and it is difficult to argue that Article 9 still remains the "peace article" many Japanese people would like to believe it is. In this video, we will review three significant events that reshape Article 9 and shape it into the article that we know today.
The Japanese Constitution, which was crafted by the US military (GHQ), was adopted in 1947. Article 9, or Kenpo 9 Jyo, is the most famous article in the Japanese Constitution. Many call it the "Peace Constitution" and it is the oldest unamended constitution in the world. The traumas of World War II and Japan's commitment to never repeat the past explain why the constitution has not been amended, but Japan has been forced to rethink what it means to pursue peace as the world around them rapidly changes.
