Walking into the Maryland State Board of Elections office, I felt the weight of what’s happening in this country. It’s a scary time. I’m scared, too! But we can’t keep pretending things will fix themselves. The system isn’t self-correcting anymore, but it can be rebuilt if enough of us are willing to step up and envision something new.

Several people have asked me why I didn’t run for local office first. The truth is, I think our local elected officials are doing a great job! They show up for their communities, listen to their constituents, and work hard. In normal times, it’s fair to say that local elections impact your everyday quality of life more than Federal elections. But in American history, that flips every 80 or 90 years, and we’re entering one such period. The choices we make in the next few years will determine what kind of world we live in for the rest of our lives.

I’m a firefighter. When there’s an emergency, my instinct is to go to the emergency. Right now, that emergency is in Congress, which hasn’t even been in session for over six weeks, may not return until next year - if ever! Federal workers are missing paychecks. Republicans are about to cut off SNAP benefits for nearly 700,000 Marylanders. Food banks are already overwhelmed.

My 86-year-old Congressman, Steny Hoyer, had his chance. Under his leadership, Congress declined as an institution, surrendering its budgeting, lawmaking, and oversight powers to the executive branch - which has led to the current situation. If we’re ever going to dig ourselves out of this crisis, we need a new generation of leaders who understand the urgency of this moment, aren’t afraid to fight, and actually live in the same reality as the people they represent.
