Illegal Archaeological Excavation in Florida Leads to Arrest

While on foot patrol in a state forest, Officer Hughes located an active dig site in a known archaeological area. Officers conducted a two-day surveillance of the site and responded when two individuals were observed digging for artifacts.

Together, they were in possession of a total of 224 pieces. They were both charged with excavation of a state archaeological site, a third degree felony. Zane was sentenced to 24 months of probation and ordered to pay $747 in costs and fees, which he has consistently made payments towards. Amanda entered a pretrial intervention program and was ordered to pay $528 in costs and fees, the entire amount remains due.
