The last program in the Coastal Mountains Land Trust 2021/2022 series of winter nature talks, in partnership with the Camden Public Library, will feature an online presentation by D. Brooks McKinney, Professor Emeritus of Geoscience at Hobart and William Smith Colleges. This presentation will review the history of Midcoast’s lime industry and then explore the unique geology of the marble and limestone deposits that provided its resource base.
Lime (calcium oxide), is an important building material and industrial chemical that is produced by burning limestone, marble or shell material. Commercial lime production in Midcoast Maine began in Colonial times and continued until the 1950s. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries lime producers in Rockland, Thomaston, Rockport and Camden produced millions of barrels of high quality lime that a fleet of local vessels exported to markets all along the east coast where it was prized as an ingredient in plaster and mortar. At its height, lime production was an integrated industry that involved quarrying, hauling, importation of fuels, production of barrels for packaging, and shipping and ship building.
In the program, Brooks McKinney refers to a resource list. The PDF can be found here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1KoLp...
