Switzerland and the SECRET of Lake Thun

THUNERSEE
This lake is the Thunersee in Switzerland. Water from an area of 2500 km² flows into it. The lake spans 48,3 km² and is at some places 217 meters deep. After the last ice age, Lake Wendel formed where two lakes now lie.
Sedimentation from the mountains created a mound in the middle of the sea.

INTERLAKEN
This is where the town of Interlaken (between lakes) is now located. Lake Thun is located to the west and Lake Brienz is located to the east. Interlaken is a Swiss town and municipality. It is an important and well-known tourist destination in the Bernese Oberland region of the Swiss Alps. Interlaken started to get a reputation as international resort around 1800 due to the landscapes of Franz Niklaus König and other Swiss landscape artists. Many tourists visit the famous Unspunnenfest, a festival of Swiss culture, which started in 1805 and 1808. It now takes place approximately every 12 years. Starting in 1820, tourists came for mountain air and spa treatment. The hotels combined with good transportation made it easy for these early tourists to visit.

PASSENGER STEAMSHIPS
In 1835, passenger steamships began operating on the lake. Ten ships, operated by the local railway company BLS AG, serve the towns of Interlaken and Thun.

SECRET OF LAKE THUN
What you would not expect when enjoying a trip on one of the passenger boats, is that the bottom of the lake contains a surprise. Following World War II and up until 1964, the Swiss Government disposed of
unused munitions into Lake Thun. The quantity dumped is reported to be from 3,000 to more than 9,020 tons.

PADDLE WHEEL STEAMER
Blümlisalp is a paddle-wheel steamer built in 1906, used in regular passenger service on Lake Thun. She is named after the Blüemlisalp mountain massif in the Bernese Oberland.

OBERHOFEN CASTLE
Oberhofen Castle is located on the shore of Lake Thun and dates back to the early 13th century. The large castle park is magnificent.

SCHADAU CASTLE
Schadau castle is situated in the Schadaupark and was built between 1846 and 1854. The castle belongs to the city of Thun and contains a restaurant and the Swiss Gastronomy Museum.

ST. BEATUS WATERFALL & CAVES
By the St. Beatus Waterfalls you also find the imposing St. Beatus limestone caves - a natural wonder millions of years old.
According to legend, the caves provided a safe haven for St. Beatus after he conquered and expelled a fire-breathing dragon in the sixth century.

PARAGLIDING
Paragliding is popular in Interlaken due to its unique location between Lakes Thun
and Brienz. The 15+ launch sites make it a premier European hub for the sport.
