In 1551, Takeda Harunobu renounces his name and becomes Shingen, a Rinzai lay monk: a spiritual and political gesture that breaks with his father’s brutal legacy and fuses warrior and sage. He consolidates Kai and advances into Shinano with sieges and alliances: subjugates Suwa (by marrying Koi-hime), takes Katsurao and Fukashi. He governs with tax reforms, irrigation, and centralized justice. Sober and charismatic, he raises the motto Wind-Forest-Fire-Mountain. Kai becomes a center of order and culture. A rival worthy of him emerges: Uesugi Kenshin, the Dragon of Echigo.
