A December 18, 1966 concert recording of French pianist Monique de La Bruchollerie playing Debussy's La cathédrale engloutie, her final encore at her final public recital. After this concert in Cluj, Romania - her third that same day - the artist was in a car accident on a snowy road, which led to serious injuries that prevented her from playing again. She would die 6 years later on December 15, 1972.
Despite a poorly tuned piano and less-than-ideal recorded sound (and the tape fading in gradually and out quite suddenly), we can still appreciate Madame de La Bruchollerie's transparent textures, broad dynamic range, mastery of the pedal, and the magical atmosphere she creates - an artist who was fully absorbed in her creative expression and who draws the listener into her world.
