The Hormuz Escort Plan

Rising tensions around the Strait of Hormuz have prompted coalition governments to evaluate the possibility of naval escort missions for commercial oil tankers, a step that could significantly reshape maritime security operations in the region.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most strategically important shipping lanes, carrying roughly 20–25 percent of global seaborne oil trade. Any disruption to this route has immediate consequences for global energy markets, shipping insurance costs, and supply chains. Over the past several days, heightened military activity and security concerns have led some tanker operators to delay transits or wait in staging areas in the Gulf of Oman until conditions improve.
In response, coalition naval forces—including ships from the United States Navy, Royal Navy, and French Navy—have increased their presence around the entrance to the Strait. These deployments include guided-missile destroyers, multi-mission frigates, and maritime patrol aircraft designed to monitor shipping lanes and deter potential threats.
While officials have not yet confirmed that escort operations have begun, defense analysts say the current force posture would allow coalition navies to initiate convoy-style protection for tankers on relatively short notice. Under such a system, warships would accompany groups of commercial vessels through the narrow shipping corridor, providing air defense coverage, surveillance, and rapid response capability against small-boat attacks, mines, or missile threats.
Escort operations in the Strait would likely follow a model similar to Operation Earnest Will, when U.S. warships protected reflagged Kuwaiti oil tankers amid attacks during the so-called “Tanker War.” Modern escort missions would rely heavily on advanced sensors, helicopters, and maritime patrol aircraft to detect potential threats before they reach commercial shipping.
For now, coalition forces appear focused on deterrence and readiness rather than active convoy operations. However, if attacks on commercial vessels increase or if maritime transit declines further, escort missions could quickly become the central mechanism for maintaining the flow of energy shipments through one of the world’s most critical maritime corridors.
