Mega Man X (PC) Playthrough

Mega Man X is one of those games that doesn't need an introduction. If you're a lover of old-school gaming, you're probably well aware of just how great a game it is already, so I'm not going to rehash all of that here. If you'd like to know my thoughts on the game itself, allow me to refer you to my playthrough of the SNES version (   • Mega Man X (SNES) Playthrough - NintendoCo...  ).

The Dos version of Mega Man X was released in the latter half of 1995, and like the earlier Mega Man PC games (Mega Man    • Mega Man (PC) Playthrough   and Mega Man 3    • Mega Man 3: The Robots are Revolting (PC) ...  ), this one was developed by Rozner Labs. Unlike those first two games, however, this one is not an original game loosely based on the IP. The goal here was to create a faithful conversion of the SNES game, and for all intents and purposes, Rozner Labs nailed it.

I rented the SNES version a few times back when it was new, but for many years, I thought of Mega Man X as a PC game. My parents bought me the Dos version for Christmas in 1995, and I sank a whole lot of happy hours into learning it inside and out. This one still feels more comfortably familiar to me than the original does.

The games aren't quite identical, but the PC version is so close that most people probably wouldn't notice the gameplay differences unless they saw the games running side-by-side.

The arm cannon's fire travels a bit faster across the screen, wall jumps can be turbo spammed, the weapon balance has been tweaked a bit, and the ride armor was taken out of the Chill Penguin stage, but the PC game retains the overall feel of the SNES game quite nicely. Even better, there's no slowdown at all on a mid-range 486, and there are no passwords! You can whack F10 to save your progress whenever you like.

The controls are excellent - they're just as fluid and responsive as they were on the SNES - and the game came packaged with a 6-button gamepad to give it that authentic console feel.

The graphics have been carefully touched up to accommodate the difference in resolution between platforms, and though it's running at a lower frame rate, the PC version scrolls smoothly and cleanly. The sound effects are identical to what was heard in the SNES games, but the music quality takes a big hit. The FM and midi versions of the soundtrack are pretty tinny and bland.

But overall, this version of Mega Man X gets a thumbs up from me. It's a solid and thoroughly enjoyable recreation of the classic SNES game, and really, what else could you ask for?
