After welcoming the Syrian leader, Russian President Vladimir Putin praised the two countries for successfully restoring their bilateral relations. Putin expressed satisfaction at seeing Moscow and Damascus continue to coordinate closely amid the new, challenging situation in Syria.
During this meeting, the two leaders discussed humanitarian aid, medical support, and reconstruction efforts in Syria, as well as the presence of Russian troops in the country. Putin also told the new Syrian president that Moscow supports efforts to restore Syria’s territorial integrity, particularly in areas where Kurdish forces are advancing in the east.
However, as part of this shift, Russian forces were required to leave the Qamichli airport, which they had been using since 2019.
Some Russian political analysts have indicated that these troops are now moving to the Russian airbase in Hmeimim, which Russia maintains in Syria, while also operating from the Tartus naval base. Amid growing tensions around Iran, Moscow’s orders to its Syrian allies show that Russia does not intend to remain passive and will continue to assert its influence in the region.
