Traveling through forests and remote roads in the 15th century was often dangerous, especially in regions such as the Kingdom of Bohemia. Trade routes connected villages, towns, and castles, but outside of protected settlements travelers were frequently exposed to bandits, deserters, and roaming mercenaries.
Dense forests provided ideal cover for ambushes. Raiders often targeted merchants, pilgrims, and lone travelers carrying goods or money. Because organized law enforcement was limited outside cities, travelers had to rely on their own awareness and preparation.
Many people preferred to travel in groups or caravans for safety. Armed escorts, hired guards, or local militias sometimes protected valuable shipments. Even so, confrontations on forest paths were not uncommon, and negotiations or attempts to avoid violence often failed.
Roadside crosses, watch posts, and small patrols occasionally helped maintain order near populated areas, but vast stretches of countryside remained unpredictable. A traveler’s survival often depended on quick decisions, knowledge of the terrain, and the ability to defend themselves when diplomacy no longer worked.
Games like Kingdom Come: Deliverance reflect this reality by portraying travel as risky, where encounters on remote roads can escalate from conversation to combat in seconds.
