When the Israeli army withdrew from Lebanon earlier this year many of its allies from the South Lebanese Army followed.

Now, as a new school year starts in Israel, the children of those soldiers have also been starting lessons.

VOICE-OVER:

00.02 It could be a class in any Lebanese school.

But this isn't Lebanon, it's Israel.

These are the children of the South Lebanese Army soldiers who fled to the Jewish state earlier this year.

For years the fathers of these boys and girls helped maintain Israel's self-declared "security zone."

00.20 When the Israeli army withdrew suddenly thousands of members of the S-L-A also left.

They feared imprisonment or even death at the hands of the extremist Hezbollah group.

Many of the soldiers brought families with them.

00.33 Now Israel has pledged three and a half million dollars towards the children's education.

00.40 UPSOUND of Hebrew class

00.43 As well the lessons they'd receive in Lebanon the children will also learn Hebrew.

Many say they're pleased with their new schools.

01.08 Thirteen hundred S-L-A children will join the Israeli education system in the next month.

The curriculum for the first year will follow the Lebanese system. Israel hopes some of the refugees can return home soon.

And from next year those remaining will be fully integrated into Israeli schools.
