Watanabe eager for return to 'Bows baseball

Описание: The University of Hawaii baseball team will open its 2026 season this weekend, hosting Gonzaga in a four-game series at Les Murakami Stadium beginning Friday.

The opener will mark a homecoming for senior second baseman Kody Watanabe, an Iolani graduate who returns to Hawaii after a winding collegiate journey. Watanabe began his career with the Rainbow Warriors as a freshman before spending one season at Southwestern Oregon Community College and the past two years at the University of San Francisco.

Watanabe said the time away helped shape him both on and off the field.

“I may not have known it at the time, but all of the decisions I made to go JUCO or to go off to San Francisco made me the individual I am today,” Watanabe said. “I really needed that to grow up and learn things about life.”

Now back in Manoa for his senior season, Watanabe said playing his final year at home carries special meaning.

“Closing things up at home means everything to me,” he said. “I made the decision with my family and friends, and the fact that I was able to make it happen really means a lot.”

As the season approaches, Watanabe said his focus is on enjoying the experience and embracing the support that comes with playing in front of the home crowd.

“I want to look back on the season with no regrets, be grateful for the memories and connections, and most importantly, have fun,” he said. “The Hawaii support system is always strong. When you look up into the stands, it gives you confidence knowing the state has your back.”

The four-game series against Gonzaga continues Saturday, Sunday and Monday.
