5.1 Simple Vowels
Important questions:
-Vowels are ..... sounds. (voiced).
-The difference in the shape of the mouth are caused by different positions of the .... and the ..... . (tongue) (lips).
-What causes the mouth different positions to change?
The tongue and the lips.
A detailed descriptions of the tongue position for a certain vowel doesn't help us to pronounce?
Because it's very difficult to see and to feel the tongue differences.
Vowels must be learned by ... (listening) and .... (imitating).
-What are the role of the organs of speech in vowel production?
Vowels are made by voiced air passing through different mouth shapes, the differences in the shape of the mouth are caused by different positions of the tongue and of the lips.

-How can we distinguish between the long /i:/ and the short /ɪ/ ?
/i:/ is longer than /ɪ/ as well as different in the quality of the sound.
/ɪ/ is nearer in quality to /e/ and that is always shorter than /i:/ .
When the vowels are followed by a strong consonant they are .... (shorter) than when followed by a weak consonant.

What is the tongue position for the vowel /ɑː/ ?
It will be at a low position.
What are the differences between /ɑː/ and /ɒ/ ?
The short vowel /ɒ/ is a bit like /ɑː/ in quality though they must be kept separate.
For /ɒ/ the lips may be slightly rounded, for /ɑː/ they are not.
