Nashville airport traffic chaos causes major delays

Описание: Travelers at Nashville International Airport (BNA) faced massive delays Monday as roadways outside the terminal came to a near standstill, leaving some passengers stranded for hours and others missing their flights altogether.

The airport said high passenger volume caused heavy backups on entrance and exit roadways, but the exact cause has not yet been determined. At the height of the delays, car rental lines stretched for more than two hours. Some travelers abandoned their vehicles and ran on foot in hopes of catching their flights.

Passenger Lucille Saucie said she missed her flight back to California because of the gridlock.

We left thinking we had plenty of time make my five o’clock return flight back to California and we got stuck in this traffic, and I called the airline, and I missed the flight,” she said. “The navigation apps didn’t warn us that there was any delay in the traffic, so we didn’t allow time for this. It’s been a nightmare.
Rideshare passengers were also hit hard by the gridlock. Trips that normally cost about $40 to $70 surged to more than $200, with many Uber and Lyft drivers canceling because they could not reach their passengers.

It’s like $239 to go to Murfreesboro from Nashville, the most I’ve paid in the past is like $69 dollars, so I’m going to try the taxis instead,” said passenger George Angelaccio "Nashville is supposed to welcome tourism you know, and I live here so my god, I hate for it to turn people off.
Courtney Arnatt, who flew in from Dallas, said she and her group waited hours for a ride that never came.

We’ve been here for two hours, we were flying in from Dallas,” she said. “All of our Ubers were canceling, so we ended up going to the hotel to have a drink and everyone has been there for over two hours.
Barbara Tyler said she decided to walk out to Donelson Pike because cars could not get into the airport.

Waiting for my sister, but she can’t get into the airport, so I’m walking out to Donelson Pike.

Some employees said the backup looked like “a big landlocked parking lot” where nothing was moving at all.

According to passengers, a major Autodesk convention booked more than 7,500 hotel rooms across multiple hotels in Nashville, adding to the passenger load. The Tennessee Department of Transportation also reported milling and paving work on Donelson Pike near the airport from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., work that will continue for the next three weeks. BNA has not confirmed whether the road work contributed to the delays.

The airport first said roadways were experiencing considerable heavy traffic “for a reason that has yet to be determined.” By evening, officials said they were “seeing a significant improvement in traffic volume” with assistance from Metro Police and the Tennessee Highway Patrol.
